Whenever we move to a new house, it doesn’t feel like home until the window treatments go up. Window treatments don’t have to cost a lot of money. There are plenty of ways to be frugal and have fashionable home décor at the same time.
I was talking to a friend recently, who also happens to be an interior designer (Hi, Andrea!), and we were reminiscing about how some clients would have budgets for window treatments that could buy a car. I’m not exaggerating. If you can afford to decorate your home with custom window treatments, I recommend doing so. However, for the rest of us, spending a car on window treatments isn’t an option.
Here are a few tips on how you can get a good deal and save money on window treatments:
- Be patient and wait for them to go on sale. Do you have some window treatments that you found in a catalog or online that you are coveting? Hang tight. Don’t pay full price! Retailers release new window treatment designs twice a year, in spring and fall. This means that the current styles will also go on sale during those times. If you can wait a few months, you can really save a lot of money.
- If you can’t wait for them to go on sale, see if you can find a way to get them cheaper. Use online coupon codes or promo codes. You can usually find one that gives a percentage off of the price. Also try outlet stores. Stores such as Pottery Barn and Ballard Designs often have deeply discounted window treatments in their outlet stores.
- Sew some using a favorite style as inspiration. If you can’t sew, maybe a friend or relative would be willing to help you out.
- Try stores that you might not have used before. For example, Amazon is known for books, movies, and toys, but did you know that they sell home décor, too? Here are some bamboo roman shades and jute smocked curtains that I found on Amazon, but you can find TONS of curtains and draperies as well.
- Think outside of the box! Why not use something that wasn’t originally meant to be window treatments? I’ve seen vintage handkerchiefs, placemats, and architectural pieces used as window treatments. One of my favorite ideas is to use a tablecloth. Tablecloths come in standard sizes that are similar to standard curtain sizes. They come with their edges neatly sewn and finished, so no sewing is required. All you need to do to use a tablecloth as a window treatment is a nice curtain rod and some drapery clip rings, which you can also find on Amazon. Simply clip the rings to one of the edges to hang the tablecloth up.
- Buy simple and inexpensive white blackout curtains and add some embellishments to customize them. You can take them to an embroidery shop that does monograms and have yours embroidered on them. You can even add some trim around the edges simply by using fabric glue. By adding these personal touches you can make them look custom.
