Classic Summer Whites: Timeless Linen Dresses and Southern Style Staples

This article is part of my Old Fashioned Summer Saturdays series, a weekly look at timeless summer traditions, seasonal recipes, and vintage-inspired living. This week, we’re covering the important topic of what to wear in the South during the hot, sticky months of our beloved Summer.

I think people who move to the South often assume that us native folks hate the summer as much as they do. Do we complain about the heat? Of course. Will you overhear us say, “It’s not the heat; it’s the humidity.” You certainly will. But what newcomers may not realize is that our love of summer in the South runs as deep as a magnolia tree’s roots. It is truly our time to shine.

Classic summer whites, the dresses we reach for when the humidity rises

Where most transplants go astray is that they often assume what is good for the summer in Nantucket is good for the heat in Georgia. That is simply not the case. We love a linen. A seersucker. A caftan. Lululemon isn’t making anything that Southern girls want touching their skin in mid-July, because darlin’, we will be getting “sticky” in this heat.

Many have strayed from the Labor Day through Memorial Day rule for wearing white clothing. But here in the South, we WILL be wearing white during the summer to reflect the heat. Lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton aren’t just breathable; they’re part of our heritage. Just ask any Southern grandmother why her Sunday dress was always starched and white. These materials move with the heat, not against it.

Nothing beats the feel of a linen dress in a Georgia breeze.

So yes, we may gripe about the heat, but make no mistake, we were made for this season. From porch swings to garden parties, there’s a quiet elegance to the way Southerners dress for summer, and classic whites are right at the heart of it. Whether it’s a crisp linen dress, a cotton blouse that’s seen a dozen Julys, or a pair of pearl drop earrings that feel just right in the glow of twilight, our style says: we belong to this place and this moment. If you’re new to dressing for Southern summers, start simple. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite timeless summer staples HERE, pieces that look just as lovely on a back porch as they do at a bridal shower.

Style it Saturday – Amazon Capsule Wardrobes

Welcome back to another edition of Style it Saturdays! Today I am excited to share some capsule wardrobes for the whole family. These capsule wardrobes are all featuring pieces that you can find on Amazon.com.

What is a capsule wardrobe? Capsule wardrobes are made up of pieces of clothing that can be mixed and matched for countless outfits. The wardrobe as a whole uses a fewer number of clothing items, usually in classic colors or styles. Capsule wardrobes save time and money and mostly steer away from trendy pieces. As always, you can click on any of the pictures below to be taken to the exact items featured.

Here is a capsule wardrobe for women. All of the items featured belong to the “Amazon Essentials” store. Amazon Essentials are the same quality items you find in name brands, but at a lower price point.

Next is a capsule wardrobe for men. This capsule also features items from the “Amazon Essentials” store.

Here is a capsule wardrobe for girls. Not all of these items are from the “Essentials” store, but they are all from Amazon at great prices.

Finally, here is a capsule wardrobe for boys. Again, these are all great pieces you can find on Amazon.

I hope you found these capsule wardrobes helpful. You can find more posts like this from me over on LTK. LTK is easiest to use on their free app. Find me there by searching “BelleAntiquarian.”

Until next time!

Style It Saturdays March 27, 2021

Hi, Friends! I’d like to introduce you to a little programming change. 😉 You may remember that I did a series of blog posts last fall titled, Wear it Wednesdays. In an attempt to streamline my posts a little bit and organize them for you to find easier, I am planning to do just one weekly post instead. Style it Saturdays will be a round up where I feature all of the outfits from the week before. So today will be our very first weekly Style it Saturdays!

To begin, one of my favorite pieces in my own wardrobe is my chambray shirt dress. It’s a class wardrobe staple that won’t go out of style. In the photo below you can see some ways that I suggest styling a chambray dress. You could also style it wearing some leggings underneath it with ballet flats. The possibilities are endless. You can find all of the commissionable links for each of the pieces in the photo on my LiketoKnow.it. You can either click HERE or click on the photo to find them.

The next dress that I want to show you is one that I consider to be the perfect traveling dress. It travels very well in a suitcase and can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. In addition to the ways that I’ve suggested to style it below, you could also add a button-up shirt over it, tied in a knot at the waist. Click HERE or click on the picture for commissionable links.

The dress below is one that I think you could wear 3 seasons of the year. An army green field jacket over the top would allow you to wear it in spring or fall. Some leather knee boots would look great with it as well. Click on the photo below, or click HERE for commissionable links.

I want to show you how versatile the jeans are below. You can create a sporty look with the sneaker and tank, or you can create more of a flirty, boho look with the pieces on the right. Click HERE or click the photo below for links.

The outfit below is my favorite from this week. This dress is cut to perfectly flatter a woman’s figure. I love adding accessories in complementary colors, so this pop of orange works well here. It’s just a happy spring/summer outfit! Click HERE or click the photo below for the commissionable links.

And finally, who isn’t ready for some warm weather to dine on a patio? Click HERE or click the photo below for the commissionable links.

I hope you’ve enjoyed our first Style it Saturdays! Until next time!

Classic Wool Sweater – Wear It Wednesday

I’m a big fan of having classic staples in a wardrobe, and a tan wool sweater is a perfect example of one. There are dozens of ways to wear one, and here is just one example:

This is a lightweight wool sweater from Ralph Lauren that I like to layer over a button up. I’ve paired it with some worn jeans and Coach loafers for a casual look. But it would totally work for the office with some nice pants. The whole look is pretty timeless, so invest in pieces that will hold up well over time.

  • Sweater – Ralph Lauren Sport
  • Blue Shirt – Old Navy
  • Jeans – Kut from the Kloth
  • Shoes – Coach

I have put together similar pieces for you to find if you want to recreate this look. You can click HERE or the photo below to find my commissionable links for these pieces.

I hope you’re having a great week!

Vintage Ralph Lauren Field Jacket – Wear It Wednesday

One of the reasons I love fall is that I can wear all of my favorite, classic clothes. I love mixing second-hand and vintage pieces with new ones. I am obsessed with this vintage Ralph Lauren field jacket. The leather collar and accents are perfection.

My rule of thumb when I buy second-hand clothing is to look for designers known for their quality and classic looks that will never go out of style. Ralph Lauren is probably my favorite designer in that aspect. Also, when I find a brand and fit that I like, I will specifically look for it in the future – like these Pilcro and the letterpress jeans.

  • Jacket – vintage Ralph Lauren
  • Shirt – Lauren Ralph Lauren
  • Jeans – Pilcro and the letterpress
  • Loafers – Sperry

I’d love to know, who is your favorite designer to shop for second-hand clothes?

Tomorrow starts our fall break, and we couldn’t be more excited. Have a great week!

~Abby
