American Living Room Design Plan: Warmth and Style

It’s the beginning of a new month, which means it’s time to release another designed space. A few weeks ago I took a poll on Instagram, and the majority of followers voted for this month’s design to feature a living room.

In most American homes, the living room is the space in the house where a family will gather to sit and relax together. Living rooms provide the perfect opportunity to show your style and to incorporate pieces that reflect your personal flair. In this living room design plan, I’ve purposely used multiple sources for the items featured. I want to discourage you from walking into a furniture showroom and buying a completely matching living room set. In order to create a collected aesthetic that is a unique reflection of your style, you’ll need to pull together pieces from different sources.

Design preferences are FINALLY moving away from sterile, all-white or gray interiors. The design I’m featuring today is warm and evokes a feeling of “home” with saturated and inviting colors. The wall color for this living room design is Shaker Beige, HC-45, from the Benjamin Moore historic color collection. On the floor you will find a timeless selection of traditional hickory hardwoods. Using Shaker Beige and hickory hardwoods as the base for our design, we begin to layer in warmth and richness, starting with a woven Persian rug.

The sofa in this month’s design is fully customizable. After choosing the basic shape of the sofa, I selected the number of cushions, fabric, cushion filling, and feet. The feet selected are walnut stained feet with brass castors. The fabric shown is “Atlantic Performance Blakely.”

At this point in the design, we have the base in which to start adding complementary furniture, art, and accessories. I added some leather armchairs and walnut end tables that echo back to the lines of the traditional sofa. The elegant coffee table pairs well with the metal accents on the sofa feet.

The table lamps in this living room design are ones where a visitor might wonder if they’re new or if they were found on an antiquing adventure.

I selected window treatments and an art piece for this space that pull from the colors found in the rug, sofa, and wall color. If you’re only able to change one thing in your living room, try finding a new art piece that will unify the other colors used in your space.

The final layer in this living room design plan is for accessories. Accessories are such a fun way to inject personality into your space. Here I have used conversation pieces that add texture and interest.

Make-Ahead Thanksgiving Breakfast Ideas for a Relaxed Morning

The first time I cooked a full Thanksgiving meal, I was twenty-two years old, and in the years since then I’ve learned that one of the best ways to have a stress-free holiday is to prepare as much in advance as possible.

Most families have their favorite Thanksgiving dishes that they look forward to all year long. The turkey and sides are the main event, but one thing I always prepare ahead of time in addition to those is Thanksgiving breakfast.

Whether you have young children waking up to watch the parade, adults visiting from out of town, or simply want to have something delicious for breakfast that you don’t have to cook that morning, using these Thanksgiving breakfast ideas will make your morning a little less stressful.

Set Up a Self-Serve Thanksgiving Drink Station

One of the easiest ways to prepare Thanksgiving breakfast ahead of time is to set up a self-serve drink station.

By using a small folding table in the breakfast room or a console table in the living room, we set up an area where everyone can help themselves to their breakfast drink of choice.

The night before Thanksgiving, we set up our coffee maker at the temporary drink station. Our coffee maker allows us to set a timer for it to automatically brew, so we fill it with water and coffee ahead of time. This allows early risers to help themselves while you’re making meal preparations in the kitchen.

The next morning, I’ll add a pitcher of cranberry-orange juice and bottles of water as other options in addition to the coffee. If you have small children, you can set out individual milk containers or juice boxes for them.

If you’re setting up a self-serve drink station for Thanksgiving breakfast, you’ll also want to set out mugs for coffee and glasses for juice, spoons, and coffee additions like cream and sugar.

By setting up a self-serve drink station for Thanksgiving breakfast, you’re able to keep traffic around the kitchen prep area to a minimum, which keeps the pressure off of the cook.

Plan a Simple Activity for Thanksgiving Morning

There have been many times when I felt pulled in a dozen different directions on Thanksgiving morning. When my kids were small, they woke up excited and full of energy for the day. During the years when we hosted out-of-town guests on Thanksgiving, I felt pulled to entertain them while also needing to be in the kitchen working on our Thanksgiving dinner.

The holidays are a special time to spend together as a family making memories and sharing special conversations. However, it is nice to plan a few simple activities for Thanksgiving morning for when you need to get things done in the kitchen.

One of the simple activities I plan for Thanksgiving morning involves the Thanksgiving parade. The night before, I set out some Thanksgiving parade bingo cards that I printed out, along with a handful of pencils. In the morning, I go ahead and turn the TV on the station that the parade comes on. As family and guests watch the parade, they can check off the boxes on their bingo card.

Another thing I like to do is to set out Thanksgiving crackers. Thanksgiving crackers are the same thing as Christmas crackers, but they’re decorated for Thanksgiving. They’re usually filled with a joke, a hat, and a trinket or game. This is a fun way for everyone to share their jokes and games with each other while the cooks are busy with other things.

These simple activities are meant to make your morning easier. It’s important to keep them basic and manageable so that they don’t add additional stress to your day.

Make-Ahead Thanksgiving Breakfast Ideas

The main thing you can do ahead of time for a stress-free Thanksgiving morning is to make breakfast ahead of time. Using a few of these Thanksgiving breakfast ideas will make your morning much simpler.

Our Thanksgiving breakfast starts with some fruit cut and placed into a serving dish the night before. In the morning, we pull it out of the refrigerator and place it on the breakfast table so that everyone can serve themselves.

Along with the fruit, we will either have an egg and sausage casserole that’s been cooked in a slow cooker, or we’ll have some cold slices of ham and cheese. Both are good options when the oven is busy with items for dinner. Everyone can help themselves to these as well.

For our family, it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving morning without pumpkin muffins. These delicious muffins can be made in advance, and they’re popular with both young kids and the adult crowd.

The Best Pumpkin Muffins

Ingredients
  

  • 1 ¾ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 1 15-oz can pumpkin puree, or 1 ¾ cups lightly packed fresh pureed pumpkin
  • ½ cup coconut oil, melted and cooled
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbsp molasses, optional

Equipment

  • 1 Muffin tin
  • Muffin liners
  • 1 Large Bowl for the dry ingredients
  • 1 Medium Bowl for the wet ingredients
  • 1 Whisk or spatula
  • 1 Ice Cream Scoop to make diving batter easier
  • Toothpicks to test if done

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 375* and line a muffin pan with 12 liners.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl, whisk, and set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the remaining ingredients until well combined and smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir together until well incorporated, but do not over mix.
  5. Using an ice cream scoop, divide the batter among the 12 muffin cups. They will almost be full.
  6. Bake for 22-24 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. (Cooking times can vary. Check at 20 minutes.)

Notes

  • Equipment: Use a standard 12-cup muffin tin lined with paper liners for easy cleanup. A large mixing bowl and medium bowl make the process simple, and an ice cream scoop helps divide the batter evenly for perfectly sized muffins every time.
  • Storage: Keep muffins covered at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Reheat briefly in the microwave or toaster oven to bring back their just-baked flavor.
  • Freezer Friendly: Once cooled, freeze muffins in a single layer on a tray, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Thaw at room temperature or warm gently before serving.
  • Add-Ins: Fold in ½ cup of chopped pecans, chocolate chips, or dried cranberries for extra flavor and texture.
  • Serving Tip: These muffins pair beautifully with coffee, tea, or a touch of cinnamon butter.

Thanksgiving in Our New Historic Home

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away, and this will be our first year celebrating in our “new” historic home. I want to give a house update and share our Thanksgiving table with you.

We’ve been working hard to settle in and make our house feel like home. All of the moving boxes have been unpacked. Many of them had been in storage for four years, and thankfully we’ve only had two items broken. Our kitchen renovation is finished, and we’ve restored the flooring in several rooms. We’ve restored many of the original iron railings, and the rest will have to wait for warmer weather this spring. Outside, we’ve planted hundreds of perennials, including boxwoods, hydrangeas, and peonies, to name a few. If all goes well, there will be blooms throughout the yard from spring through summer next year.

We’re also researching the proper way to reglaze our original, working, sixteen pane windows. We’ll start the slow process of reglazing them when weather turns warmer. This is considered a maintenance task, and if we do it correctly, it won’t need to be done again for decades.

As we’re nearly the holiday season, we’re also preparing to host out-of-town guests. Several guest spaces have been completed to make them comfortable during their stay. Unfortunately, a custom sofa that we ordered in September still hasn’t arrived, which is creating stress as Thanksgiving draws near.

In spite of the lack of living room seating, there is a place for everyone at the dining room table. We’ll treasure the times spent with our friends and loved ones this season. We will be gathered around the table to enjoy delicious food and each others company. I’ve included a few photos of our Thanksgiving table this year. You will notice that there is a Christmas tree up in the dining room. There are a few reasons for this, which I can talk about in a future article, but let’s just say the turkey still tastes the same with the tree up!

Discover Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2025

It’s the beginning of a new month, which means it’s time to release another designed space. This month features a new bedroom design, which has been inspired by the Benjamin Moore color of the year and color trends palette for 2025.

Benjamin Moore recently released their color of the year and a color trends palette for 2025. (Read more on the Benjamin Moore site HERE.) I designed a space using 4 of these colors, and I want to show you how simply changing the wall color can drastically change the whole room. The Benjamin Moore color of the year for 2025 is Cinnamon Slate 2113-40. In addition to Cinnamon Slate, I incorporated some of Benjamin Moore’s color trends for 2025: Sea Salt CSP-95, Paris Rain 1501, and Tissue Pink 1163.

In the first design plan I’m featuring Cinnamon Slate as the wall color. Cinnamon Slate is a deeply saturated and sophisticated hue that can be treated as a neutral when taken care not to overwhelm the space with competing colors. Because Cinnamon Slate is the star of this design, we can carefully add selections that keep the space calm and serene. I found a piece of wall art that unites all four of the paint colors that I’m featuring today. This artwork is integral to creating a cohesive design. The furniture and other decor pieces are either very neutral and without pattern, or they only have a pattern that includes colors from the color palette that I’m featuring. With Cinnamon Slate as a backdrop, the other design selections are noticeable individually as they pop away from the darker color.

In the next design I have kept all of the exact selections from the design above, but I have simply switched out the wall color from Cinnamon Slate to Paris Rain. I absolutely love Paris Rain. It has been one of my go-to color selections for years. I urge you to get a color swatch in person, because you will love it, too. The silk draperies, which are barely a whisper of pink, like Tissue Pink in our color scheme, become a direct complementary color to Paris Rain, as they are opposites on a color wheel. In this design, Cinnamon Slate transitions to an accessory color in the bowl, lamp, and artwork.

Again we are going to keep the exact same design, but this time we can see how it would look if the walls are painted Tissue Pink. I think Tissue Pink is a very palatable pink. It’s an excellent option if you want to warm a space up, while still keeping it neutral. Notice how the selections change with Tissue Pink as the background. The lamp, draperies, and rug are all unique accessories, but with a similarly toned wall color like Tissue Pink, we can start to feel more on the monochromatic end of the spectrum.

Lastly, let’s look to see how the design changes when we change the wall color to Sea Salt. Sea Salt is the lightest hue in the palette that I’m featuring today. In this design, the artwork, accessories, and rug become the stars of the show. This is a good example of showing that often choosing a lighter paint color changes the focus of the room onto the things that are in it. If you have artwork and collections that you want to spotlight, a lighter paint color may be the best option for you.

Each of the design selections for this room can be found linked below. Now that you have seen the same room in four different colors, I want you to slowly scroll back up. In each room, focus only on the artwork above the bed. Notice how the artwork works perfectly in each room, and yet as the paint color changes the artwork looks somehow different in each one. Ah, the power of paint! As I said at the beginning, the artwork is integral to this design.

Paint is one of the easiest ways to change a room, and it’s important to select the right color for your space. As you can see, it can completely change the entire design.

Essential Books for Cut Flower Gardening Success

We’re nearing the end of October, and most people aren’t thinking about flowers and sunshine. However, if you want to have a bounty of cut flowers this spring and summer, now is the time to plan. In some cases, now is the time to get seeds and plants into the ground.

There are many excellent resources on the internet to use when you’re planning a flower garden. But in my opinion, nothing beats a book in hand. There’s something about an actual book that is just inspirational and motivational. I have quite a few gardening books on my bookshelf, but today I want to share just a few of the flower gardening books that have become my favorites over the years. The Little Book of Cut Flower Gardening This is a small, but surprisingly helpful little book. It would make a great gift for someone just starting their flower growing journey. It gives applicable tips, and at the end gives a brief overview of some commonly grown cut flower varieties.

Peonies for Perpetual Profit Even if you aren’t planning to grow peonies for profit, and most people aren’t, this book gives valuable knowledge for growing peonies successfully. It also gives a list of peony varieties and descriptions so that you can choose the varieties best suited for your own garden.

In Bloom Is an excellent book for going a little deeper into the types of flowers you should grow for a well-rounded bouquet. It explains different shapes of flowers in a bouquet, varieties of flowers, and containers to arrange flowers in.

Seasonal Flower Arranging: Fill Your Home with Blooms, Branches, and Foraged Materials All Year Round This is a stunning book filled with gorgeous inspirational photos and valuable insight. One of my favorite things about this book are pages that read like recipes that can be helpful for pulling together a bouquet similar to the ones pictured.

The Flower Farmer: An Organic Grower’s Guide to Raising and Selling Cut Flowers If you’re becoming serious about cut flower gardening and want to consider selling them, this is the book for you. The book details farming practices, different ways to make income with flowers, and testimonials from successful people in the industry. There is an immensely valuable resource guide at the end for everything from where to buy buy everything from seeds to refrigeration.

The Complete Language of Flowers: A Definitive and Illustrated History This is a flower dictionary, of sorts. It details flowers and their scientific names, while also providing symbolic meanings, folklore, and facts related to each one.

The Cutting Garden: Growing and Arranging Garden Flowers An excellent resource for people who enjoy cutting their own flowers and making floral arrangements. Included are tips for how to pull together arrangements by season and color.

Martha Stewart’s Gardening: Month by Month Of all of the books on my gardening shelf, this one provides the most inspiration. I would buy it again, just for the illustration on the inside cover. This is my favorite book on the list!

Martha’s Flowers: A Practical Guide to Growing, Gathering, and Enjoying This book provides information for how and when to plant and harvest, tips for arranging, and other helpful advice. Not to mention there are pages of beautiful, inspirational photos of Martha’s home.

Arranging Flowers – The Best of Martha Stewart Living This is another inspirational book by Martha Stewart. This is for the home flower gardener that wants to grow and create simple home arrangements, often only using one or two types of flowers in them.

If someone were to ask me what my interior design style is, I would say “collected.” Collected interior spaces are ones that can rarely be rushed or quickly pulled together, so they range from feeling as though they are not finished to sometimes being a little overly done. People who resonate with collected interior design are ones who wish to have their personality reflected in their spaces by featuring a mixture of old and new pieces, original artwork, items collected from travels, and multiple design styles.

Of all of these characteristics of collected interior design, the one that resonates the most with me is original artwork. Fun Holiday Activities for Young Adults and Families

I’m always looking for ways to keep the magic of Christmas alive now that our kids are young adults. Our youngest is in college, and our oldest lives about 3 hours away, so I try to make the most of our time when we’re all together as a family. I heard a quote a few years ago, and since then it has become something that I have become intentional about. The quote is, “Relationships are built on shared experiences.” I think this quote applies to many types of relationships, but isn’t it beautiful to think of in the context of families?

Where can we go together? What foods can we taste together? What games can we play together? How can we have FUN together? ‘Shared experiences’ have one thing in common, time spent together. Even when the quantity of time isn’t great, like when we are separated by distance, we can be intentional about the quality of the time spent together.

This brings me to my point of intentionally planning experiences this holiday season with our 20-something year olds and their significant others. My husband, Ken, and I are planning several things, but the one I want to share today is the white elephant advent calendar exchange we are planning for Thanksgiving. I use the term ‘white elephant’ loosely because we are really only using the rules of the game in this situation. We’re going to buy and wrap advent calendars to play a gift exchange with. Since our kids are in their young 20s, and therefore on a budget, Ken and I are going to buy all of the advent calendars. If we continue this game in years to come, we’ll up the fun-factor by asking everyone to contribute a wrapped one of their own.

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to play this game, because the advent calendars are needed before December 1st. We’re going to choose calendars that anyone would enjoy, regardless of who ends up with it. It will really be fun to see which ones are the favorites.

For now, I have rounded up sixteen of this year’s advent calendars that I think are the best. This list includes picks for young children, teens, women, and men. Bedroom Interior Design Plan: Collected Woodland Retreat

I’ve decided to start releasing some designed spaces once a month. Each month I will share at least one room design with sources that everyone has access to. This month I am going to share a bedroom and a bathroom design.

I’ll be sharing paint colors, products, and tips that will be helpful if you want to implement this bedroom design in your own home. I created this bedroom to be an enchanting woodland retreat with a mixture of textures, soft colors, and natural elements. The combination of natural wood tones and painted pieces gives the impression of a space that has been collected over time.

This solid wood spindle bed is a classic design that will truly become a family heirloom. As mentioned above, mixing natural wood tones and painted pieces creates a collected feeling. These end tables make excellent nightstands. They have a slightly aged patina. Be sure to note the design on the top before adding to your cart.

The art in this bedroom space is in keeping with the collected and found mood we are creating. The rabbit print, faux antlers, and book collection are 3 different ways to bring art into the design in a demure, unassuming way.

It’s easy to create a luxurious bedding ensemble and avoid the “bed in a bag” look by layering complementary linens. I recommend using the quilt as a base. Fold the gorgeous blue duvet and leave it at the end of the bed during the day. These throw pillows bring in another layer of soft texture.

The lighting I selected for the room is an example of how the juxtaposition of metal and natural fibers can work together to create a pleasing aesthetic. The chandelier and lamp work like a dream in this bedroom design. I encourage you to layer the lighting in each of your spaces using ambient, task, and accent fixtures.

Finally, we come to the walls and the floor. In this space I have featured a two-tone wallpaper with a nature inspired design. Wallpaper is not for everyone, so you can certainly use paint instead. I like Benjamin Moore “White Sand” 964 with these pieces, but you should select a color that’s right for your spaces using the light in your particular room. On the floor in this design I have chosen a floral rug. This particular rug is essential to the design because it pulls all of the colors from the room together.

Create Your Dream Bathroom: Tips & Sources

I’ve decided to start releasing some designed spaces once a month. Each month I will share at least one room design with sources that everyone has access to. This month I am going to share a bedroom and a bathroom design.

I’ll be sharing paint colors, products, and tips that will be helpful if you want to implement this bathroom design in your own home. These are designs that you can pick and choose which elements to bring into your own spaces. They’ll be saved here on my website, or you can save them on Pinterest. You can come back and add pieces to your spaces as time and budgets allow.

I created this bathroom with the idea that it can blend with multiple design styles, while also being timeless. I want to help you select finishes and furnishings that can stand the test of time. Let’s move away from “fast fashion” in home decor and move towards selecting heirloom choices that will be loved for decades.

This design features two different tiles. The first tile is a basket weave pattern with natural marble stone. This tile can be used on both walls and floors. It’s a classic in both pattern and material. The second tile is a matte gray slate. This slate tile is approved for both wall and floor application, but I only recommend it for floors in this case. We want to avoid using the slate tile on walls and showers because it will create a trendy aesthetic.

Next, I selected a versatile and transitional bathroom vanity. The vanity is available in two colors, gray and white, and either color would be appropriate for this design. The vanity is available with one or two sinks, and it features a real, natural marble counter top. The holes are pre-drilled on the vanity, so I selected a faucet that will fit and complements the hardware on the vanity cabinet.

As I move on to lighting, I want to encourage you to consider laying lighting, even in your bathroom. I selected an overhead light for ambient light, as well as sconces for next to the mirrors. The sconces will give better lighting for makeup application and using the mirror, so those are our task lights. In addition to these, you could also add a little counter top lamp.

The apothecary storage cabinet, the art, stool, and plant are beautiful pieces that pull the entire design together. These are also the pieces that you could switch in and out if you want to change your decor up without a costly renovation. (I am obsessed with this black swan print and trying to work it into my own decor somehow.)

For this space, I recommend to paint with Benjamin Moore “Wish” AF-680. Remember, this is a suggested paint color for the space. You should choose a paint color that is best for your bathroom.

Creating the Perfect Flower Garden Plan

Today I am sharing my plans for a flower garden, how I chose the flowers that I’m planting, and when I will be planting them. I will be sharing the whole list of plant and seed varieties that I am using, in case you would like to use them as well.

Save on Seeds

There are many factors to consider when starting a flower garden. The main ones that I focused on for my garden were growing zone, sun exposure, color scheme, and height of plants. My growing zone is 8a. It’s important to know what your growing zone is because it will determine the earliest and latest dates that you can successfully plant and get the best results. It will also indicate if you need to put your plants in during the fall or the spring. If you don’t know what your growing zone is, you can check the Farmer’s Almanac website or the USDA website.

Next you will need to know what type of sun exposure your garden bed will have. My garden bed is “full sun.” You can figure out what type of sun exposure your garden bed gets by simply seeing how much shade it gets throughout the day. Most flowering plants like to be in the sun.

After finding your growing zone and sun exposure, it’s time to decide what type of flowers you want to plant. One suggestion that I have for creating a beautiful garden is to decide on a color scheme. Just like interior rooms look more cohesive with a set color scheme, garden beds do as well. I decided to use a color scheme of purple, yellow, and white. This is a complementary color scheme because purple and yellow are directly across from each other on a color wheel. In gardening, green and white are considered neutral colors, so white flowers in my bed will be “neutral.”

Just a note about red: For those that love red flowers, if you want a complementary color scheme, your garden colors will be red and white flowers with green foliage, since green is the complementary color to red. Another color scheme that looks nice is red, white, and blue. A monochromatic color scheme with reds, oranges, and pinks is also one to consider, although it’s not my personal favorite.

Okay, after I chose my color scheme of purple, yellow, and white, I then looked at height of plants. I wanted the tallest plants to be in the back and the shortest plants to be in the front. This way none of the flowers are hidden, and taller or “leggier” plants have their stems hidden by the shorter row of flowers in front of them. Something else I looked at was when each plant would be blooming during the season. If everything turns out like I planned, I should have at least one type of flower blooming from early spring through late summer.

This is one of the spaces I am using for a flower garden. This space gets full sun. Everything that I’m planting in the fall will be planted here. I’ve added 6 bags of manure and completely turned the soil over to prepare it for seeds and tubers.

What I’m planting this fall, so that it will be ready to flower in the spring:

  • Allium Gladiator, purple, 40″ tall, perennial
  • Peony, Festiva Maxima, white, 39″, perennial
  • Itoh Peony, Bartzella, yellow, 24-36″, perennial
  • Canterbury Bells, Campana Lilac, purple, 30-34″, biennial
  • Allium Mount Everest, white, 30″ tall, perennial
  • Stock Seeds, Miracle Blue Mid, purple, 24-30″, annual
  • Allium Purple Sensation, purple, 28″, perennial
  • Yarrow, The Pearl, white, 16″, perennial
  • Alyssum, Basket of Gold, yellow, 8-12″, perennial

As you can see, most of these plants are perennials, so they come back each year.

In the spring, I will be planting the rest of my seeds, which are all annuals. These are going to be in a separate, but adjacent, flower bed.

I purchased all of my flowers from Eden Brothers. The Eden Brothers website is very use friendly. You can filter by all of the things I mentioned in this article – color, growing zones, perennial, and so on. When your seeds arrive they will have a QR code to get specific instructions. I also received a link via email with helpful information for most of the flowers that I ordered.
